04 / GENERAL ACADEMIC · SOCIAL & NATURAL SCIENCES
A source can combine unfamiliar ideas, figures and tables. The challenge is deciding which evidence answers the question—and what it does not prove.

A student team tests two factors in a herb-garden trial: watering level and mulch cover. Each plot receives the same seed batch, soil mix, planting date, and harvest date.
The team reports mean dry biomass after six weeks. The controlled background conditions allow comparison of the two planned treatments, but the findings cannot establish what would happen in every climate or soil type.
Interaction: the effect of one factor changes depending on the level of the other factor.
| Watering level | No mulch | Mulch cover |
|---|---|---|
| Low watering | 2.5 | 3.0 |
| High watering | 3.1 | 3.2 |
